Time for a change

By CreativeWings, 9 April, 2012, No Comment

You can’t open the door to change “just a little”.

It’s like cleaning out the junk drawer in your kitchen.

You start by cleaning out that one drawer that is driving you crazy because you can’t:

1) open it
2) find anything in it
3) close it

And then before you know it, you have a table full of things that need to be put away (somewhere other than that drawer) and as you try to find places for them, you are forced to clean out other drawers/closets/boxes so this reorganized stuff will fit. Before you know it, your quick little project has turned into an all day cleaning session. In the end, it feels great, everything in its place, and a feeling of accomplishment each time you open that drawer, but it definitely was a bigger project than you thought it would be.

Making a change in your life is a like this. You begin by deciding that you want to change just one thing – and before you know it, you find that many things in your life that you have been ignoring/neglecting are all in that same drawer, and need your attention. The good news is that once you get them all out on the table, you can now decide where they need to go, and what attention they need.

How to get started? For me, I pick a couple easy things first – you know, things that only need a phone call or a simple task to complete them. Then, move on to some of the more complicated ones, and if they seem too overwhelming, break them down into a series of smaller tasks.

Before you know it, your “drawer” will be on its way to being organized and cleaned up.

Now, what about that hall closet???

Can I get a light?

It doesn’t matter how long we may have been stuck in a sense of our limitations. If we go into a darkened room and turn on the light, it doesn’t matter if the room has been dark for a day, a week, or ten thousand years — we turn on the light and it is illuminated. Once we control our capacity for love and happiness, the light has been turned on. – Sharon Salzberg

Before I begin to write I frequently go to quotes for inspiration. I choose a subject that seems to be meaningful to me, and read until one of the quotes inspires me. The quote this time, struck me immediately.

I have written about change, and our ability to change frequently, but I think that the image of a light going on in a room so clearly puts a visual image on the idea of how much even a small change can make in our lives, I had to use it.

I know I am guilty of thinking that the small changes that I make don’t really have that much of an effect on my daily life, but if I imagine each one of the changes as “turning a light on in a dark room” it suddenly seems like I am really doing something.

Imagine, something you’ve wanted to change, but have not because it seemed too overwhelming to begin. Now imagine that same something as a house (or office building if it’s a really big goal) with all the lights turned off. Got it? Ok, now imagine each move you make towards that goal turns on a light in one of the rooms. Can you see it?
I think the reason this visualization works for me, is that turning on a light isn’t difficult, and the difference it makes in the room is transformational.

Over time each room will be illuminated with your progress, until the entire building is aglow.

I love this image, and hope it helps to get you unstuck from your sense of limitations.
