A small Difference

“We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.” – Marian Wright Edelman

I had the pleasure of spending a week with my brother and his family recently. One of the best parts of the trip was observing my brothers interaction with all of the various people he would come in contact with each day. Wherever we went, he always took the time to talk to the people around us. Usually it was just a simple “Hello” followed by some comment about whatever it was that was happening at the time, but always, it was genuine.

The fact that he took the couple of extra seconds each time to talk to the other person, to listen, and hear to how they responded, made a difference not only in his day, but in the day of the other person as well.

I like to think of myself as a friendly person, and I frequently do the same thing, but I think that having the opportunity to spend time with him and witness the change of energy in each of the situations, reminded me about how easy it is to make a difference each day.

If it’s been a while since you struck up a conversation with a stranger, it might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but it’s all right if you start off slowly. The next time you go to purchase your coffee, or buy a movie ticket, just start off with a simple “Hi”, and a smile. Just notice how this small step makes you feel. How did the other person respond? Before you know it, you’ll be more comfortable, and will want to move on to short conversations.

My brother was just being himself, and interacting with people the way he always does. What he didn’t know, and what I didn’t expect, is that by doing this, he was making a difference in my life.

You just never know.
