Who’s Afraid?

By CreativeWings, 19 April, 2010, No Comment

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Recently, I had the chance to perform as a puppeteer for the first time in about five years. The fear of stepping out onto the stage and all of the “what ifs” nearly kept me from saying “yes” to the opportunity. Even though this is something that I love to do and something that has given me great joy in my life, I almost allowed my fear to keep me from it. Luckily, I have a fantastic coach and friends that encouraged me to face this fear. I am so thankful that I did. Not only did the performance go very well, but looking back on how much fear I had about it and how I challenged myself to push through, has given me a great sense of accomplishment and pride.

When was the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone?

If it has been a while, what is it that is stopping you from doing something you have always wanted to do?

Is it fear?

If you are like most of us, it probably is. So many times in life, we come up against that wall called fear and we turn away. The anxiety, racing heart, sweaty palms and voices in our head saying “you can’t” serve as signs that we are venturing into territory that is “off limits”, or “too scary.”

How would it feel if you could get to a place where all these warning signs were present, but you pushed through them into that great unknown?

For each of us, every day, opportunities arise that we could pursue if we could only move through the fear.

What is it for you?

Dating? Rock climbing? Performing for an audience? Saying “hello” to someone you’ve noticed on the train? Following your dreams? Writing a blog?

What might happen if you did “look fear in the face?”
