“I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” – Wayne Gretzky

A friend with sent me this quote, and as seems to happen so often in my life, it couldn’t have been timed better.

I had, days before, been talking with a friend who is going through a difficult time. We were discussing her current situation and some of the choices she was making that seemed more rooted in the past than in the future.

The past often calls in siren tones and lulls you into believing that what was, is the only possibility. We are well acquainted with the people and behaviors that the past held for us, and in tough times, even bad pasts can be a comfort because we know what to expect of them.

I shared with her my belief that you literally need to wake up each morning and consciously make the decision to choose the future. Easy to do? Not at all, but the future holds the promise of joy, happiness and possibilities that you cannot today imagine – it’s where the puck is going to be.

Yes, to be fair, it may also hold some tough choices and painful separation from that familiar, comfortable past, but ultimately, the past is where the puck was.

Tomorrow, I am going to choose to skate to where the puck is going to be.
