What If?

Reality is much more complex than any judgment of right and wrong encourages you to believe. When you really understand the ethical, spiritual, social, economic, and psychological forces that shape individuals, you will see that people’s choices are not based on a desire to hurt. Instead, they are in accord with what they know and what world views are available to them. Most are doing the best they can, given what information they’ve received and what problems they are facing.- Michael Lerner

Is there someone in your life that isn’t living up to your expectations?
How does that affect you?
Are you angry, hurt, frustrated, disappointed, confused?
Do you often hear yourself say “if only…” or ”why doesn’t he/she just…”

I have a question for you.

What if this person is doing the best that they can?

No, really. Take a few minutes to consider this.

What IF this person is doing the best that they can?

How would that change the way that you are judging them and their situation?

Wait a minute…did I just accuse you of being judgmental?
We all do it. Each of us, every day take our perception of the world, how we think things should be done, and apply it to those around us.
It’s how we are able to understand the world. The trouble with this, though, is that it’s OUR understanding of the world, not the other persons.

So, since you can never fully understand all of the things/situations/problems that someone else is using to filter their view of the world, how can you be certain that the choices that you would make for them are correct?
AND, again I ask you, what if they are doing the best that they can?

What if just today, you let go of your expectations of them and what you think they should do?

What might letting go of this give you room for?

How might your perception of them change?
