There’s Still Time!

By CreativeWings, 15 October, 2012

Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can. – John Wesley

It’s mid October, and I am thinking about the end of the year.

Why? Because at the end of last year I made a promise to myself to get involved in an organization that I believe in, as a volunteer.

So here it is, October, 10 months later, and I haven’t done it.

I had the best intentions. I did some research and asked friends what they were involved in, but never went that extra step.
I know I am not alone in this. When I mention this to friends, I get similar stories of meaning to get involved, but no actual volunteerism.
The same friends were quick to let me off the hook for this, by adding “well, it’s understandable, you have this and that and then there was that other thing you had to do”, and I nod and am thankful that I am again relieved of any guilt that I was feeling.

So, where does that leave me?

It’s mid October, and I am thinking about the end of the year.
It’s time to move forward on this. This is important to me.
I’ll let you know how it goes.

The Joy of Challenge

By CreativeWings, 12 August, 2012

If you were all alone in the universe with no one to talk to, no one with which to share the beauty of the stars, to laugh with, to touch, what would be your purpose in life? It is other life, it is love, which gives your life meaning. This is harmony. We must discover the joy of each other, the joy of challenge, the joy of growth. – Mitsugi Saotome

I love this quote.

It is sometimes difficult for me to remember to find joy in challenges. I’m sure I’m not alone in that. Challenges and growth are often difficult, because by their very nature, they force you to stop doing something or behaving in a way you’re accustomed to.
When I’m taken out of my comfort zone, I am not always happy. (again, I think I’m not alone in that)

Here’s the trick I have found for finding joy (or if not exactly joy, acceptance) in these situations… Ready?
While a situation may occur that you have no control over, (insert situation here) your response to that situation is entirely up to you.

Yup – how you choose to respond is up to you.

You can choose to change a behavior, choose to find the lesson, choose to remember all of the wonderful things, choose to grow, choose to move on, choose to apologize, choose to forgive, choose to laugh, choose to love, or any number of other possibilities too numerous to mention.

Yes, when challenges occur and you feel like there is only one way to respond, take a moment and remind yourself that you are not trapped, boxed into a corner, forced to make a decision or anything. (remember, not deciding is in fact making a decision) You have options, you have choices. You do. Really.

That is where you can find the joy.

I have a choice. I always have a choice – I find joy in that.

I hope you will too.
