“If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”
― Fred Rogers

I love this quote, and I am struck constantly by how true it is.

I’ve written about this before. It’s something that is important to me – remembering that every day, in every moment we can make a difference in the lives of the people we meet, AND “the people you may never dream of”.

It’s a tough challenge to really take this to heart. We get busy, or hurried, impatient or apathetic to the world around us, and it slips from our consciousness.

So please, let me (and Fred Rogers) remind you.

Who you are, and how you interact with the world matters. You do leave something of yourself at every meeting. What do you want it to be?

It’s your choice.

The Joy of Challenge

By CreativeWings, 12 August, 2012, No Comment

If you were all alone in the universe with no one to talk to, no one with which to share the beauty of the stars, to laugh with, to touch, what would be your purpose in life? It is other life, it is love, which gives your life meaning. This is harmony. We must discover the joy of each other, the joy of challenge, the joy of growth. – Mitsugi Saotome

I love this quote.

It is sometimes difficult for me to remember to find joy in challenges. I’m sure I’m not alone in that. Challenges and growth are often difficult, because by their very nature, they force you to stop doing something or behaving in a way you’re accustomed to.
When I’m taken out of my comfort zone, I am not always happy. (again, I think I’m not alone in that)

Here’s the trick I have found for finding joy (or if not exactly joy, acceptance) in these situations… Ready?
While a situation may occur that you have no control over, (insert situation here) your response to that situation is entirely up to you.

Yup – how you choose to respond is up to you.

You can choose to change a behavior, choose to find the lesson, choose to remember all of the wonderful things, choose to grow, choose to move on, choose to apologize, choose to forgive, choose to laugh, choose to love, or any number of other possibilities too numerous to mention.

Yes, when challenges occur and you feel like there is only one way to respond, take a moment and remind yourself that you are not trapped, boxed into a corner, forced to make a decision or anything. (remember, not deciding is in fact making a decision) You have options, you have choices. You do. Really.

That is where you can find the joy.

I have a choice. I always have a choice – I find joy in that.

I hope you will too.
