The Joy of Challenge

By CreativeWings, 12 August, 2012, No Comment

If you were all alone in the universe with no one to talk to, no one with which to share the beauty of the stars, to laugh with, to touch, what would be your purpose in life? It is other life, it is love, which gives your life meaning. This is harmony. We must discover the joy of each other, the joy of challenge, the joy of growth. – Mitsugi Saotome

I love this quote.

It is sometimes difficult for me to remember to find joy in challenges. I’m sure I’m not alone in that. Challenges and growth are often difficult, because by their very nature, they force you to stop doing something or behaving in a way you’re accustomed to.
When I’m taken out of my comfort zone, I am not always happy. (again, I think I’m not alone in that)

Here’s the trick I have found for finding joy (or if not exactly joy, acceptance) in these situations… Ready?
While a situation may occur that you have no control over, (insert situation here) your response to that situation is entirely up to you.

Yup – how you choose to respond is up to you.

You can choose to change a behavior, choose to find the lesson, choose to remember all of the wonderful things, choose to grow, choose to move on, choose to apologize, choose to forgive, choose to laugh, choose to love, or any number of other possibilities too numerous to mention.

Yes, when challenges occur and you feel like there is only one way to respond, take a moment and remind yourself that you are not trapped, boxed into a corner, forced to make a decision or anything. (remember, not deciding is in fact making a decision) You have options, you have choices. You do. Really.

That is where you can find the joy.

I have a choice. I always have a choice – I find joy in that.

I hope you will too.

Opportunities for Growth

Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely. – Karen Kaiser Clark

The strongest principle of growth lies in the human choice. – George Eliot

I am choosing to grow.

I have always been someone who loved learning and have challenged myself to continue to grow. However, most of the time I have chosen the time and the place, and what it was that I was going to learn.

I have, at times, avoided some tough lessons. (who hasn’t, right?)

Sometimes life gives you opportunities for growth that you would rather not have – the option for growth is too hard, scary, ill timed, or frankly, is just something that you don’t care to learn.
Sometimes though, you just can’t avoid a good old life lesson, and voilà, you’ve got yourself an opportunity for growth.

Now’s your chance to choose wisely. It may be overwhelming, hard and stressful, or perhaps it will open you up to new ideas and ways of seeing things that you never expected.

At least that’s what I am finding.

Is it still hard? Yes, it is, but as I mentioned before, I have always loved a good challenge.
