What’s so great about Spring?

Spring is a time of new beginnings. Why not make Spring resolutions a part of your life.

Mile Marker Approaching

By CreativeWings, 19 December, 2010, No Comment

Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. ~Hal Borland

So many expectations and pressures surround the change of a calendar.

What if instead of January 1st being the start of a whole new journey, it is instead, a mile marker on the trip you are already on?

How would that idea change the way you approach it?

What if like any trip you were to take, you began making plans for where you want to go, where you will stop along the way, what you want to see, and what you need to pack before you hit the next mile marker on December 31st?

For me, this analogy holds more freedom for changes of direction and unexpected turns in the road than the idea of a set of goals for myself that I must achieve before the next years end.
This way of thinking still challenges me to choose where I would like to be at this time next year, and knowing that, set a course for myself.
Some questions I find helpful to ask myself are:

• Where do I want to go? (Really the toughest question of the bunch because there are so many choices)
• Who is going with me? (Sometimes road trips are taken alone, but often they are so much better when you have someone to share the journey with)
• What do I need to do now in preparation for my trip? (Is there something you have been putting off that needs to be complete before you can “leave”?)
• Where will I stop along the way to check my progress? (Rest stops are a great opportunity to see where you are and decide if you need to make any adjustments to your route.)
• What will I do once I get there? (Ok, this might actually be the toughest question. It certainly is the one that we forget to ask ourselves the most often. Once you have arrived at your destination, will you celebrate? Settle down where you are? Plan the next leg of your journey?)

You certainly don’t need to have an answer for that last question before you begin, but if you have time to consider it during your trip, it will make the next leg much easier to plan.

So, for me, there is another mile marker approaching, and I am planning to pull off at the next rest stop to take a look at the map and see where I’d like to go next.

Happy New Year, here’s to a wonderful journey.
